Lake Yamanaka: Alternative to Lake Kawaguchiko for Mt. Fuji Photography

Planning a proposal or couple photo session around Mt. Fuji? One question I receive surprisingly often is whether Lake Kawaguchiko or Lake Yamanaka is the better choice.
When people imagine photographing Mt. Fuji, Lake Yamanaka (Yamanakako) is usually the first place that comes to mind.
It is undoubtedly one of Japan's most famous sightseeing destinations, and I photograph there many times every year.
However, depending on the season, weather, and the type of photographs my clients hope to create, I often recommend Lake Yamanaka instead.
This recent proposal is a perfect example of why.
A Surprise Proposal at the End of a Three-Week Trip Around Japan
In mid-April, I had the pleasure of photographing a surprise proposal for a couple visiting from the United States.
They had spent nearly three weeks traveling around Japan, exploring Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and many other beautiful places.
Their final destination before flying home was Mt. Fuji.
To celebrate the end of an unforgettable trip—and the beginning of a new chapter together—he planned to propose with Japan's most iconic mountain in the background.
Originally, we planned to meet early in the morning at Lake Kawaguchiko.
Unfortunately, the weather forecast had other ideas.
Changing the Plan Because of the Weather
The forecast predicted rain throughout the morning, with Mt. Fuji completely hidden behind thick clouds.
Rather than continuing with the original schedule and hoping for the best, I suggested changing our plans.
The rain was expected to stop around 2:00 PM, so we postponed the proposal until the afternoon.
I also recommended moving from Lake Kawaguchiko to Lake Yamanaka, where we could enjoy a quieter atmosphere after the weather improved.
Fortunately, everything worked perfectly.
The rain cleared, the clouds slowly drifted away, and Mt. Fuji appeared just in time for one of the most important moments of their journey.
Sometimes, a little flexibility makes all the difference.
Why Lake Yamanaka?
Many visitors have heard of Lake Kawaguchiko, but far fewer know about Lake Yamanaka.
Officially introduced as the closest lake to Mt. Fuji, Lake Yamanaka sits at an elevation of approximately 980.5 meters, around 150 meters higher than Lake Kawaguchiko.
It is also the largest of the Fuji Five Lakes.
Because of its wide shoreline and expansive lake surface, the scenery feels incredibly open, allowing Mt. Fuji to dominate the landscape.
Unlike the busy sightseeing atmosphere around Kawaguchiko, Lake Yamanaka feels quieter and more natural.
Why I Love Photographing at Kirara
Most of my Lake Yamanaka sessions take place around Yamanakako Kirara.
This beautiful lakeside park offers far more variety than many people expect.
Within just a short walk, we can photograph:
Wide grassy fields
Wooden boardwalks beside the lake
Natural lakeshore
Reeds and wetlands
Beautiful open skies
Expansive views of Mt. Fuji
Instead of photographing from one famous viewpoint, we can continue walking while creating completely different images every few minutes.
That makes the gallery feel much more like a story than a collection of photographs taken in the same place.
Whether it's a surprise proposal, engagement session, or pre-wedding shoot, Lake Yamanaka offers incredible flexibility.
Lake Kawaguchiko or Lake Yamanaka?
I often receive this question from couples planning their trip.
The answer is simple:
Neither location is always better.
They simply offer different experiences.
Lake Kawaguchiko
Lake Kawaguchiko is ideal if you love:
Seasonal flower gardens
Cafés and souvenir shops
Convenient sightseeing
Iconic Mt. Fuji viewpoints
It is one of Japan's most famous tourist destinations, especially around Oishi Park, where flowers bloom throughout much of the year.
Lake Yamanaka
Lake Yamanaka is perfect if you prefer:
Fewer crowds
Open natural landscapes
Lakeside walks
Cinematic scenery
Relaxed photography sessions
The atmosphere feels much more peaceful, making it especially suitable for surprise proposals and couples who want natural photographs rather than busy tourist locations.
A Short Drive to Panorama-dai
After the proposal, we drove about fifteen minutes into the mountains to visit Panorama-dai.
This viewpoint overlooks both Mt. Fuji and Lake Yamanaka, creating one of the most spectacular panoramic views in the area.
In April, the surrounding hills are still recovering from the annual controlled grass burning, giving the landscape a rather simple appearance.
During autumn, however, the hills transform into golden fields of Japanese pampas grass, making Panorama-dai one of my favorite hidden locations around Mt. Fuji.
If you're looking for dramatic landscapes with very few visitors, it's well worth the short drive.
One Last Stop at Hananomiyako Park
Before finishing the session, we made one final stop at Hananomiyako Park.
It's an easy stop when driving between Lake Kawaguchiko and Lake Yamanaka, making it a wonderful addition to a full-day photography session.
The photographs were taken on April 20.
By this time, Tokyo's cherry blossoms had already disappeared more than two weeks earlier. Yet here in Lake Yamanaka, beautiful cherry blossoms were still blooming alongside the season's first tulips.
During summer, the park becomes famous for its colorful flower fields, including large sunflower displays, making it another wonderful stop when visiting the Mt. Fuji area.
Choosing the Best Location for Your Mt. Fuji Photography Session
Every couple's trip is different.
Some dream of flower fields at Lake Kawaguchiko.
Others prefer the peaceful atmosphere of Lake Yamanaka.
Rather than recommending the same location to everyone, I always suggest the place that best matches the season, weather forecast, and the style of photographs you're hoping to create.
Sometimes, changing the original plan leads to something even better.
For this wonderful couple, what began as a rainy morning became one of the most memorable afternoons of their three-week journey through Japan—and the perfect place to begin the next chapter of their lives together.
