Planning a Surprise Proposal in Japan: Mt. Fuji Engagement at Lake Kawaguchiko

Their First Trip to Japan, Their First View of Mt. Fuji
Last autumn, we had the pleasure of photographing a very special proposal at Lake Kawaguchiko, with the iconic Mt. Fuji standing quietly in the background.
The couple traveled all the way from Australia for their very first trip to Japan.
It was also their first time seeing Mt. Fuji in person.
Surrounded by one of the most symbolic landscapes Japan has to offer, the groom wanted to share his promise with her — that he wanted to spend the rest of his life together — and to have that once-in-a-lifetime moment captured naturally, honestly, and beautifully.
That was the project they entrusted to us.
Planning a Surprise Proposal Photoshoot in Japan

Proposal photography can take many forms.
Sometimes, we start as a casual couple photoshoot and end with a surprise at the final location.
Other times, the proposal is completely secret — I stay hidden until the very last moment, waiting quietly with my camera.
For this proposal, we chose a slightly different approach.
An Anniversary Proposal at Lake Kawaguchiko

The timing was perfect: the couple was celebrating their first anniversary together.
We created a story where their hotel had arranged a “special anniversary photo plan” — a short photo session with Mt. Fuji as the backdrop.
Under that premise, I picked them up directly from their hotel and guided them to the best locations around Lake Kawaguchiko.
The hotel staff kindly cooperated with us in advance and helped keep everything a secret.
This approach has a big advantage:
rather than hiding and waiting, I can bring the couple to the best light, the best scenery, and the best timing, while still keeping the proposal itself a surprise.
It allows flexibility, calmness, and a much smoother experience — especially for first-time visitors to Japan.
After the Proposal — Autumn Engagement Photos Around Lake Kawaguchiko

Once the proposal was successful, we spent the rest of the afternoon exploring several beautiful autumn foliage spots around Lake Kawaguchiko.
The atmosphere was relaxed, joyful, and full of quiet excitement — the kind that only comes after a life-changing “yes.”
To close the story, we returned to their hotel and captured a few more intimate moments, with Mt. Fuji watching over them from above.
Via Mizuno Hotel — A Luxury Hotel with Panoramic Mt. Fuji Views

This shoot was made possible with the cooperation of Via Mizuno Hotel.
Lake Kawaguchiko is home to many hotels, but this one truly stands out.
Located on a hillside, every guest room, restaurant, and even the onsen offers a panoramic view of Mt. Fuji and the lake.
We know many hotels around the Mt. Fuji area, and honestly —
this is one of the best.
For couples planning a proposal, anniversary trip, or engagement stay, it is a place where the view itself becomes part of the memory.
