Some photo sessions are planned months in advance.

Others arrive as a message only a few days before.

This engagement session near Mt. Fuji was one of those last-minute requests—and it became one of my favorite mornings of the summer.

In early July, I received an inquiry from a young couple visiting Japan from the United States. They had been traveling across Japan for nearly two weeks and were about to fly home.

What made this session unique was that they had only been dating for about two months.

It was also the first overseas trip for both of them, and they had spent the previous two weeks traveling around Japan together.

Three days before returning to the United States, they contacted me with a last-minute request.

Before heading home, they wanted to take a set of engagement photos with Mt. Fuji.

So on the morning of their departure day, I met them at their hotel near Kawaguchiko just after sunrise.

An Early Start at Japan’s Most Famous Mt. Fuji Viewpoint

When overseas visitors tell me,

“We want photos with Mt. Fuji and the five-story pagoda together,”

the first location I usually suggest is Chureito Pagoda at Arakurayama Sengen Park.

The combination of the pagoda, Mt. Fuji, and the city below has become one of Japan’s most recognizable views, and it's easy to see why it remains so popular.

One thing many visitors don't realize, however, is that reaching the famous viewpoint requires climbing the Sakuya-Hime Stairway—398 steps up the hillside. The climb usually takes around 15 to 20 minutes and can feel surprisingly challenging, especially during the summer months.

Why We Started at 6:00 AM

July is one of the most challenging times of year for Mt. Fuji photography.

The weather is hot, humidity levels are high, and Mt. Fuji often disappears behind clouds later in the morning. Early mornings generally offer the best chance of seeing the mountain clearly.

There was another reason for our early start.

Chureito Pagoda is now one of the most visited sightseeing spots around Mt. Fuji. By mid-morning, the observation deck can become crowded with visitors waiting for photographs.

For couples hoping to enjoy a relaxed photo session, arriving early makes a huge difference.

So I picked them up from their hotel at 6:00 AM.

The city was still quiet.

The summer air was already warm, but the mountain stood clearly against a deep blue sky—a reward for the early wake-up call.

A Tall, quiet Boyfriend and a Fearless Girlfriend

One thing that stood out during the session was their dynamic as a couple.

He was tall and a little shy in front of the camera, while she was clearly the more outgoing of the two. Having only been together for a couple of months, there was a natural freshness to their interactions, and they gradually relaxed as the morning went on.

The Famous View Is Only Part of the Story

While most visitors come to Chureito Pagoda for the famous view of Mt. Fuji, the park itself offers much more than the observation deck.

Early in the morning, the walking paths and wooded areas around the shrine were quiet and filled with soft summer light. After photographing the iconic Mt. Fuji view, we spent some time exploring these quieter corners of the park.

Some of my favorite images from the session came from these simple moments—walking together along the hillside paths, surrounded by fresh green leaves and the first light of the day.

A Slow Walk Back Down

As we made our way back down through the park, more visitors were beginning to arrive at the observation area.

The morning light was still filtering through the trees, so we stopped a few more times along the stairways and walking paths for some final photographs.

These quieter corners of the park offered a very different atmosphere from the famous viewpoint and made a fitting end to the session before they headed back to the hotel and prepared for their flight home.

Engagement Photos Around Mt. Fuji

Chureito Pagoda is one of the most iconic locations for engagement photos near Mt. Fuji, and it is easy to understand why it attracts visitors from around the world.

What makes the Kawaguchiko area especially rewarding, however, is the variety of locations available within a short distance. Alongside famous viewpoints, there are lakeside paths, quiet parks, forest trails, and many lesser-known places that offer a completely different atmosphere.

For this session, Chureito Pagoda provided the perfect setting for a final morning in Japan before the journey home. But it was also a reminder that there is always another corner of the Mt. Fuji area waiting to be explored.
