We are bozphoto & styles, a small photo team based in Tokyo, photographing weddings, pre-weddings, proposals and family sessions all around Japan, including the Mt. Fuji area.

Over the past years we’ve visited Lake Kawaguchiko many times for sunrise shoots – from solo portraits to pre-wedding photos and surprise proposals with Mt. Fuji in the background.

Mt. Fuji sunrise photos at Lake Kawaguchiko

Mt. Fuji is one of the most iconic views in Japan, and Lake Kawaguchiko is one of the easiest places to enjoy that view from Tokyo. When you come here at sunrise, the air is calm, the lake is still, and you often get a beautiful reflection of the mountain on the water.

If you’re dreaming of a romantic photoshoot with Mt. Fuji in the background – whether it’s a pre-wedding session, a couple portrait, or even a surprise proposal – early morning is one of the best times to be here.

Best season and time of day to see Mt. Fuji

Even if you travel all the way to Kawaguchiko, Mt. Fuji can sometimes hide completely behind the clouds.

You have a better chance of seeing it clearly in winter or early spring, when the air is colder and there are fewer clouds.

Time of day also makes a big difference.

From my experience, dawn and early morning give the highest chance for a clear view, before the clouds start forming around the peak.

A portrait session with the reflection of Mt. Fuji

One spring, I received a message from a traveler from Jakarta, Olivia, who wanted a portrait session with Mt. Fuji.

She was visiting Japan with her family and hoped to capture the most beautiful view of the mountain, with its reflection in the lake.

We decided to meet at Lake Kawaguchiko around 5:00 in the morning, just as the first light hit the top of Mt. Fuji.

We were both a little sleepy at the beginning, but once the sky started to turn pink and the reflection appeared clearly on the lake, it felt completely worth the early start.

Ideas for pre-wedding, couple and proposal photos

This session was a solo portrait shoot, but the location and light are also perfect for:

  • Pre-wedding photos in a wedding dress or suit, with Mt. Fuji in the background

  • Casual couple photos during your honeymoon or anniversary trip

  • A surprise proposal at sunrise, followed by relaxed engagement portraits around the lake

Because sunrise is quiet and the lakeside is less crowded, you can enjoy more private, intimate moments without too many people around you.

It’s a beautiful way to start the day together, and the soft morning light makes the photos feel very calm and timeless.

How we plan a sunrise session at Kawaguchiko

For a sunrise photoshoot, we usually start the session a little before the sun comes up, so we can photograph both the blue hour and the first warm light on the mountain.

If you stay at a hotel around Lake Kawaguchiko the night before, I can meet you directly at your hotel early in the morning and we move to the lakeside together.

Kawaguchiko has many different photo spots – lakeside viewpoints, small piers, and quiet streets with a view of Mt. Fuji – so a 2-hour or 4-hour session works very well if you want to explore a few locations.

We also keep an eye on the weather forecast and cloud conditions in the days before your session, and adjust the exact meeting time or spot to give you the best chance to see the mountain clearly.

Chureito Pagoda – another iconic Mt. Fuji viewpoint

After spending about an hour by the lake, we also visited Chureito Pagoda, a shrine located on a hillside overlooking Kawaguchiko city with Mt. Fuji in the distance.

From the top, you can see the red five‑story pagoda, the town below, and the mountain lined up in one frame – it’s one of the most “postcard‑perfect” views of Japan.

To reach the main viewpoint, you need to walk up almost 400 steps from the parking area, so it’s a bit of a hike but the view is truly rewarding.

If you are planning to wear a wedding dress or long gown for your pre‑wedding photos, it’s better to bring comfortable shoes for the climb and change into your dress once we arrive at the top.
