Cherry Blossom Wedding Photos in Tokyo – Clara & Williams’ Honeymoon Story

On a spring day in Tokyo, I had the pleasure of photographing Clara & Williams, a couple who traveled all the way from Vancouver for their honeymoon in Japan.
It was their first visit to the country. Like many couples who dream of experiencing Japan in spring, they had one clear wish:
to take wedding portraits surrounded by Sakura — the iconic cherry blossoms.
When they arrived in Tokyo, the peak bloom had just begun to pass. Petals were starting to fall, and many well-known locations were already thinning out. Instead of risking disappointment, I suggested Shinjuku Gyoen, one of Tokyo’s most beautiful gardens and one of the most reliable places to still find cherry blossoms lingering a little longer into the season.
It turned out to be the perfect choice.
Morning or Golden Hour? Choosing the Right Light

When planning cherry blossom photography in Tokyo, timing matters as much as location.
Morning offers fewer crowds and cleaner backgrounds.
Late afternoon brings softer, warmer light that feels cinematic and romantic.
Clara and Williams had to choose between calm space or dramatic light. After talking it through, they decided to begin the session at 3:00 PM.
As the afternoon unfolded, the light gradually transformed. What started as soft daylight slowly shifted into warm golden tones reflecting across the water and filtering through the Sakura branches. By the end of the session, the park felt quiet and dreamlike.
Sometimes, the light tells its own story.
A Couple Full of Energy, Warmth, and Authentic Connection

From the very beginning, Clara and Williams brought a natural ease to the session.
Clara’s vibrant pink and purple hair contrasted beautifully with the soft pastel tones of the cherry blossoms. Her floral dress moved gracefully as she twirled, adding motion and joy to the photographs. Williams, composed and gentle in his pastel suit, looked at her with unmistakable admiration.
They laughed easily.
They held hands instinctively.
They leaned into each other without needing much direction.
Some couples feel nervous in front of the camera. Clara and Williams simply enjoyed being together. Their playful energy, balanced by quiet, intimate moments by the pond, created a beautiful contrast throughout the session.
The Sakura framed them — but their connection was the true focus.

Why Shinjuku Gyoen Works So Well for Cherry Blossom Photography
Shinjuku Gyoen is one of Tokyo’s most versatile locations during cherry blossom season:
Multiple cherry blossom varieties bloom at slightly different times
Open lawns allow elegant, clean compositions
Water reflections add depth and atmosphere
Late-afternoon light enhances the romantic mood
Even when petals begin to fall, the atmosphere becomes more poetic. Blossoms drifting onto the pond or scattered along the pathways can feel even more emotional than peak bloom itself.
Planning Your Cherry Blossom Photos in Japan

Cherry blossom season in Tokyo is short and changes every year.
Some varieties bloom as early as February, while the iconic Somei Yoshino typically peak for only about one week in late March or early April.
Even if you visit slightly before or after peak bloom, there are often other cherry blossom varieties still in season — and with the right location and timing, beautiful photos are always possible.
If you’re planning a spring trip to Japan and dreaming of Sakura portraits, feel free to reach out. I’m happy to help you choose the best timing and location.
Planning Your Cherry Blossom Wedding Photos in Japan
If you are traveling from overseas and dreaming of Sakura portraits:
Allow flexibility in your travel schedule if possible.
Choose locations with multiple cherry blossom varieties.
Decide whether you prefer fewer crowds (morning) or dramatic light (late afternoon).
Work with a photographer who understands bloom timing and location strategy.
Cherry blossoms are unpredictable. But when timing, location, and connection come together, the result feels timeless.
Clara and Williams embraced that fleeting moment of spring — and together, we created photographs that feel just as romantic now as they did on that beautiful day in Tokyo.
