Two ways to capture your surprised proposal in Tokyo, or any places in Japan

Updated: 5 days ago

Kimono couple session at Asakusa temple

Having a forever promise during a oversea trip is very romantic. Capturing a proposal moment is one of the most popular photo requests for us.

So, how do we capture your special moment?

When you ask us for the photography service, we always ask which way first, either...

(1) Total surprise until the proposal moment

Or

(2) Start as a couple session, then show your ring as we arrive at a certain spot.

Let me explain to you how more in details.

Proposal as a total secret

It is more popular option for majority of our clients, in fact.

We shoots a lot of couples from overseas every year. Most of them are, yes, they are either engaged or married already, and want to take pictures as a honeymoon memory etc.

But in case you are just a couple, hiring a photographer sounds something, right? If your girlfriend has a sharp instinct, she may recognize that you have a plan.

We need a lot of discussion beforehand

In this case, photographer has to be invisible to your fiancé until you pop up the ring.

So, we make in details discussion about how you wan to do, about location, timing, and angle. Out of those three elements, angle can be very important to capture a good photo.

Here is one example.

My client wanted to propose with the Tokyo Tower as a background. In this case, they have to be in fix spot that Tokyo Tower is visible, and at the same time, stand in a position that I can see both faces.

So, I explained to him position that a few times, with some illustration that I made.

However, in the moment of proposal, I guess he was a bit nervous that he kneed down showing his back facing me.

I was in the position to photograph with the Tokyo Tower in the background, and to time to move to the side when the action started.

Fortunately, I was able to capture her face with a surprised face.

Proposal Photo start as a couple session

Second option is, we start the photo session as a couple session. Your girlfriend knows that you hired a photographer.

Sound a bit awkward? You can explain to her that it's your anniversary of dating or want to keep it as a memory, and why not to take some pictures by a professional.

In this case, we spend some time, usually about one hour or 2-3 hours, as a regular couple session.

Here is the couple from Jakarta, Indonesia. Bryan, groom, contacted me as a kimono session in Asakusa area of Tokyo as we spent first two hours.

Then we moved to Tokyo Station, where he requested as the place for the proposal.

First, I take them to a spot that I can take pictures with a good background.

Second, I tell them to stand back to back each other, while their faces are visible.

Third, I give him a sign, sometime like take off my hut. It's time that he can take out a ring from a pocket and ask girlfriend to turn around.

Good capture, right?

If the background is important for you, this option is my recommendation.

In case you still want to keep it secret, no problem. I have one way to offer. But let me explain to you more as you contact us.

OK, enough with all the explanation.
