Shinjuku Night Couple Photoshoot | Neon Streets of Tokyo

Tokyo has many interesting neighborhoods to photograph after dark.
In Shinjuku, a short walk can take us from the lantern-lit alleys of Omoide Yokocho to the neon streets of Kabukicho and the red gates of Hanazono Shrine.
For this couple from Canada, the Shinjuku session was a spontaneous addition to their trip.
Just ten days earlier, I had photographed their proposal in Hakone. They loved those photographs so much that, one day before leaving Japan, they contacted me again and asked if we could also take some photos in Tokyo.
For their final night in Japan, we met in Shinjuku and spent two hours walking through these very different parts of the neighborhood.

Starting in Omoide Yokocho in Shinjuku
We began at Omoide Yokocho, a small group of narrow alleys near Shinjuku Station filled with tiny restaurants and drinking spots.
At night, lanterns and restaurant signs illuminate the streets. There is not much room, and people are constantly passing by, but that is part of the atmosphere here.
Rather than trying to make the alleys look empty, I use the signs, crowds and narrow spaces as part of the photographs.
From there, we walked beneath the railway tracks toward Kabukicho.
Neon, Crowds and Kabukicho
Kabukicho is one of Tokyo’s busiest entertainment districts, and at night the whole area is filled with light.
This is what makes a Shinjuku night photoshoot so different from photographing Tokyo during the day.
Instead of sunlight, we work with whatever the city gives us—red lanterns, green fluorescent lights, shop windows, huge signs, headlights, and reflections.
Walk just a few minutes and the colors can change completely.
For couples who want something casual and less formal than traditional pre-wedding photos, it is also a fun way to simply walk through Tokyo together while I photograph what happens along the way.
Ending at Hanazono Shrine
Our last stop was Hanazono Shrine, just a short walk from the busy streets of Kabukicho.
After all the neon, traffic and crowds, suddenly we were surrounded by red torii gates, shrine lanterns and darkness.
It is one of the contrasts I love about Shinjuku.
Even in the middle of one of Tokyo’s busiest neighborhoods, you can turn a corner and find a completely different atmosphere.
We finished our two-hour session there, surrounded by the red gates of the shrine.
Tips for a Shinjuku Night Photoshoot
Omoide Yokocho, Kabukicho and Hanazono Shrine work well as one route because all three locations can be connected on foot.
Starting around sunset allows us to begin while there is still a little natural light before moving into the brighter nightlife areas after dark.
Shinjuku becomes particularly busy around Kabukicho, so the crowds will usually appear in the photographs. Comfortable shoes are also important because most of the session involves walking and stopping at different streets along the way.
Simple black, white or neutral clothing tends to work well because the surrounding signs already contain many strong colors.
From Hakone to Shinjuku
Ten days earlier, I had photographed their proposal surrounded by the natural scenery of Hakone.
This time, we spent two hours walking through the nighttime streets of Shinjuku.
The locations were completely different, giving them one gallery from their proposal in Hakone and another from their final night in Tokyo.
