Cherry Blossom Season Is Shorter Than Most People Think

Cherry blossom season is the most popular time of the year in Japan.

Every spring, travelers from all over the world plan their trips around it.

But in reality, cherry blossoms only stay at their peak for about ten days.

To make things even more uncertain, the timing shifts slightly every year depending on the weather. A few warmer or colder days can change everything. That is why seeing cherry blossoms at their best is never guaranteed by dates alone.

Why Experience Matters When Photographing Sakura

Because the bloom period is so short and unpredictable, experience matters.

Over many years of photographing couples during cherry blossom season, I have built a wide range of location options—places that bloom at different times, in different conditions, and away from the usual crowds.

Some riversides near the ocean reach full bloom as early as late February, while quiet countryside roads begin to glow in mid-April, after Tokyo’s cherry blossoms have already fallen. Knowing these differences makes it possible to plan more flexibly and realistically.

A Quiet Sakura Road, Two Hours North of Tokyo

On this particular day, we drove about two hours north from Tokyo.

There, we found a hidden stretch of road lined with cherry trees for nearly five kilometers. Despite its scale, the area was completely quiet. No crowds, no tourists—just the sound of the wind and petals falling.

It became one of those rare moments where the couple could truly slow down and enjoy the season, without feeling watched or rushed.

From Cherry Blossoms to a Historic Town

After spending time among the blossoms, we headed about an hour southwest for the second part of the day.

We arrived in Kawagoe, a historic town known as “Little Edo,” a place that shows what Tokyo was like hundreds of years ago. Traditional storehouses, narrow streets, and a slower rhythm remain part of everyday life there.

The couple changed into kimono, enjoyed a relaxed lunch, and then we continued the photo session while walking through the town.

Photographing More Than Just a Season

Cherry blossoms are beautiful, but they are only one part of the experience.

What truly stays in photographs is not just the flowers, but the time spent together, the places visited, and the pace of the day. By planning beyond the obvious and adapting to the season, it becomes possible to create images that feel calm, personal, and lasting—regardless of how short the bloom may be.
