Anniversary Photo Session in Winter Tokyo – Returning to the Place Where Their Story Began

Some places quietly become part of your life story.
Not because they are famous or spectacular —
but because something important happened there.
For Steven and Katie, that place is Kichijoji, a cozy residential neighborhood in western Tokyo, known for its relaxed atmosphere, small cafés, local shops, and the beloved Inokashira Park.
Years ago, it was simply the town where they worked.
This winter, it became the place where we photographed their anniversary.
From Chicago to Tokyo
They are both from Chicago.
Years ago, they came to Japan to work as English teachers at the same language school in Tokyo. Discovering they shared the same hometown quickly led to conversation, and they naturally grew close.
That everyday connection in Kichijoji is where their relationship began.
After returning to the U.S., they decided that if they ever did anniversary photos, they wanted to take them here — not somewhere new, but somewhere familiar.
About Kichijoji and Inokashira Park
Kichijoji is a relaxed residential neighborhood in western Tokyo, known for its local shops, cafés, and slower pace compared to central Tokyo.
At the center of the area is Inokashira Park — a large park with a pond, walking paths, and the well-known swan boats. It’s a place many locals visit casually, not a tourist landmark, which makes it feel natural and personal for photos.
A Quiet Winter Session
Winter removes the bright colors from the park, but that simplicity works well for photography.
Muted tones, soft light, and fewer people create a calm atmosphere. The focus naturally stays on the couple rather than the surroundings.
We walked around the lake, stopped by the benches, and photographed them as they talked and laughed — nothing staged, just small, real moments.
It felt less like a production and more like spending time together in a familiar place.
