sakusa is one of Tokyo’s most iconic locations, blending traditional charm with a vibrant atmosphere. It’s no surprise that many couples choose this historic district for their engagement photo sessions.
Last year, we had the pleasure of photographing Daivd & Kelly, who traveled all the way from Hong Kong to capture their story against the stunning backdrop of Senso-ji Temple and the charming streets of Asakusa.
Asakusa a Popular Destination for Tourists
Asakusa is one of Tokyo’s most visited districts, offering a perfect mix of cultural heritage, historical landmarks, and lively local experiences. The area is home to Senso-ji Temple, Tokyo’s oldest and most famous Buddhist temple, which attracts millions of visitors each year.
The vibrant Nakamise Shopping Street, lined with traditional stalls selling souvenirs and Japanese snacks, adds to the charm of Asakusa.
With its nostalgic atmosphere from a few hundred years ago, friendly street vendors, and cultural performances, Asakusa offers a truly immersive experience for both locals and international travelers.
Highly populated place for rental kimono shops
Because of old style atmosphere and popular tourist destination, Asakusa has more than 50 kimono rental shops.
It sounds like there are too many choose from, but majority of them offer Budget polyester kimono that price around 2000 yen - 3000 yen for a few hours. Meanwhile, there are other places that carry a selection of authentic silk kimonos.
I have about four shop that I recommend if you want to experience some real style. When you inquire us for a photo session, will let you know.
Walking a street with kimono in Asakusa

If you walk along historic area of Asakusa, kimono suits very well. Kimono is a traditional Japanese clothing that they used to wear 100 years ago, but they still wear for some special occasions like weddings or festivals.
Since you are visiting Japan, why not taking some engagement photos with something traditional?
One of the highlights of the session was the moment they shared a quiet laugh under the red lanterns of Nakamise Street. The vibrant colors and traditional storefronts added a wonderful contrast to their elegant attire.

The area around big lantern is the busiest place in Asakusa that every visitors want to take pictures with. So we usually take only a few shots, then try to find a quiet corner of the street.

Sometimes I like to convert images into black & white. Sometimes, less is more. Black and white photography can simplify a complex scene, allowing the viewer to focus on the core subject without distractions.
If you want some monochrome images included in your package, please let me know. It's free to offer you both version in the final products.
Start early morning to avoid the crowds?

Many of our clients already know that Asakusa is very crowded and to ask me if we can start the session early in the morning.
It is possible. But downside is, you will miss the lively atmosphere of Nakamichi Street. Before visiting there, I always ask clients which is your priority
I often let my couples to buy some foods from a street vendors and let them enjoy while tasting.

Walking through the shopping alley of Asakusa temple is fun, as we check out all different snacks or weird gifts.

Arrived in front of Asakusa temple, also known as Senso-ji, one of the ancient Buddhist temples in Tokyo. Its history spans over nearly 1400 years.
Since 400 years ago, this temple became a popular center of entertainment and commerce, contributing to the development of the vibrant Asakusa district.

Asakusa Temple is quite tolerant of tourists taking photos in kimono. However, if you wear formal kimono or dress that look like having a wedding, security probably stop you, as commercial related photography needs a permission.
Street photos around busy Asakusa district
My clients often worry that Asakusa is over populated by tourists for taking a good pictures. It is true. Some places are super crowded that any angle that I put a camera, you will see other people on the background.
But don't worry. There are some spots that are less tourists walk around, or I find a good timing without anybody behind you.
Explore the side streets around Sensoji Temple, and you'll discover captivating street art and cozy drinking spots, providing endless possibilities for unique photos
Spending some more time around Sumida River
Want to change the background more with nature or blue sky?
Let's walk about ten minutes from Asakusa temple. I will take you to the Sumida River and the park along side.
t's a symbolic waterway, offering beautiful views and a refreshing escape from the city's hustle and bustle. The park provides stunning views of the Sumida River, with its bridges and Tokyo Skytree in the background.
It was end of January that we missed greens during this photo session. But if you come back on end of March, the park becomes a pink paradise, attracting many visitors who come to enjoy the beauty of the cherry blossoms.
Engagement photo session with half-day plan

We have three different session of engagement photos.
1. Short session, for 90 min shooting time
2. Half-day session for 3 hours shooting time
3. One-day session for up to 7 hours shooting time.
While short session is one location only, half-day session offer you photography in few different places around Tokyo.
Also, if you want to change an outfit and continue, half-day or One-day is the plan to go.
You can wear anything you want for the photo, like a Pokemon costume.
Majority of our clients choose casual wear for the second outfits. But in case of David and Kelly, they were Pokemon!!
Well, they loved Pokemon from the childhood. Besides, it was still chilly weather on January, and Mascot costumes were the choice to warm them up!
So fun hanging out with you guys!!
